Divine Dialogue: Discover God's Heart and PurposeSample

Will You Give Me a Drink?
As Jesus traveled through Samaria, He knew He would meet a special woman at a well. While His disciples went into town for food, Jesus waited for her. He took the initiative to meet her, choosing to go to Samaria and wait for this desperately needy woman. He knew about the impending life-changing encounter she was about to have, while she had no idea. When she arrived, Jesus asked, “Will you give me a drink?” She replied, “You are a Jew, and I am a Samaritan—so how can you ask me for a drink?” Jews and Samaritans had deep historical wounds, and she saw Jesus through lenses of pain, division, and shame.
How did this unexpected encounter with Jesus bring freedom to the Samaritan woman from the bondage that had kept her enslaved?
First, He led her to forgive others. We must deal with offenses we have harbored and our grievances with others. When we do so, God will grant us much grace to forgive. Second, He asked her to give Him what she thought she needed the most—a drink. He asked her for something, and He asks the same of you. As you give to Him, you position yourself to receive from Him, you are aligning yourself to receive all He has. Third, Jesus shared that He had living water, which she had no reference for. He required her to act in faith and obedience by giving him a cup of water. Finally, He revealed her past, knowing she had been in five marriages and was living in adultery. As she moved toward Him spiritually, He removed her spiritual blindness and filled her with the gift of God, the living water.
Jesus helped this woman move from a place of shame, embittered by old wounds and prejudices, into true worship and an eternal relationship with the living Savior. Her revelation of the Messiah brought new life, vision, purpose, hope, and commitment.
Divine intervention feels unexpected, but it fulfills God’s purposes. The Samaritan woman’s story is a picture of our own. Jesus waits at our well of hurt, shame, and darkness, eager to set us free. He knows our past and offers freedom beyond anything we’ve experienced. He loves you! This is your time to receive His living water and enter a season where all your needs and desires are met.
What is God asking of you? How will you respond to Him?

About this Plan

The Bible contains several stories in which God asks questions. God asks these questions because we need the answers, and you’ll see each inquiry as an invitation for a personal conversation—and encounter—with the King of kings to seek the answers that bring about His revelation, transformation, and victory.
